Biographical / Historical

The Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Institute College was organized in 1972 and officially started in August of 1973. The college was formed as a way of having more centralized administrative control over some of the emerging departments at the Institute. Originally the college was made up of five departments: Department of Computer Science and Technology, School of Applied Science, Department of Instructional Technology, Department of Packaging Science (one of only five in the country), and the Center for Community/Junior Relations (CCJR). Led by Dr. Roy I. Satre, the college offered both bachelor and master degrees and served as a starting point for new programs at the Institute. Institute College was ideal for new programs because it did not directly adhere to conventional educational practices, but let the programs develop to meet the needs of the business and industrial community. In 1981, the college was renamed the College of Applied Science and Technology.
