Historical Information: RIT Faculty Council

The Faculty Council was established in 1913 comprised of the university President, superintendents and faculty. The purpose of the Council was to “deal with administrative affairs of the Institute as far as they pertained to faculty” (Gordon, 92). After a short run President Farnum appointed a committee to assess the relevance and importance of the Faculty Council, the committee decided that there was, “no need for a Faculty Council” (Gordon, 118). It was disbanded in October of 1919. A hiatus almost 40 years ensued. The Faculty Council was revived in 1957 under President Ellingson. The new Faculty Council was comprised of representatives from all the colleges, library, and ROTC. Topics discussed by the Council and that can be found in this collection include; tenure promotion, academic advising, teaching evaluation, and racial and sexual discrimination. On January 18, 1996 under President Simone, the Faculty Council evolved into the Academic Senate following a 60-40 majority formal vote. The Academic Senate differs from the Faculty Council as the Senate is comprised of, “the President, the provost, representatives from the Dean’s Council, and the presidents of Student Government, and the Staff Council” (Gordon, 504).
