Scope and Contents

The collection contains graphic design projects undertaken by students in the 1970s as classroom assignments for faculty member R. Roger Remington, professor of graphic design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Each project is categorized by class year and specific course curriculum (e.g. senior graphic design applications, junior typography, poster design, career skills, freshmen basic design, etc.) The projects are in a variety of mediums, including sketches, posters, printed matter, photographs, and tiles. The collection was originally assembled for an exhibition of student work and subsequently donated to RIT Archive Collections by Remington.

Biographical / Historical

R. Roger Remington has spent his formative and adult life in upstate New York (the Adirondacks and Rochester). His professional education in graphic design was at non-establishment settings, having studied at Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He considers himself primarily a teacher who has critical interests in design studies (graphic design history, theory and methods), research, writing and graphic design practice. His teaching excellence has been acknowledged at RIT by the Eisenhart Annual Award for Outstanding Teaching and by the Education Award of the American Center for Design.

Since 1982 he has been seriously engaged in the research, interpretation and preservation of the history of graphic design. He has co-chaired two major symposia on graphic design history and written several books: Nine Pioneers in American Graphic Design, Lester Beall: Trailblazer of American Graphic Design, American Modernism: Graphic Design 1920-1960, and Design and Science: The Life and Work of Will Burtin.

In 2006, he was named Massimo and Lella Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design at RIT, the first endowed professorship in the School of Design.

The R. Roger Remington graphic design curricular collection contains undergraduate and graduate student work, teaching materials created by Professor Remington, and promotional materials. Also included are photographs of faculty, students, guest speakers, artwork, and a holiday party.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged by class (Graduate/Senior/Junior/Sophmore/Freshman) and then by project. Some miscellaneous projects are included.
