Overview

RIT Libraries established the Photo Purchase Prize Award program in 1981 to provide a visual history of RIT's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS). Each year works are purchased for the collection from the SPAS Student Honor Show, a juried exhibition open to students in all departments of the School.

Photographs related to the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). This collection of 71 photographs includes students and faculty in photographic labs and classrooms in the early 1970's, and portraits of Navy personnel enrolled in summer "United States Navy Quality Control of Photographic Processing" program from 1958 through the late 1980s.

The donor of this collection was Mrs. Stephen K. Sillay, wife of Mr. Stephen Sillay, who was a student in the Department of Photographic Technology at the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanic’s Institute, now known as the Rochester Institute of Technology. He attended school here from 1931-1935. The collection consists of textbooks, handouts, and objects related to courses Stephen Sillay was enrolled in relating to analog photographic processes, as well as a few personal objects.
