Scope and Contents

Council for Better Hearing and Speech public service posters and film clips contains seven posters, each highlighting a celebrity of the time with a hearing impaired child campaigning for education on better hearing and speech. The celebrities who participated in the campaign were Nanette Fabray, Lou Ferrigno, Lorne Greene, Ronald Reagan, Buddy Ebsen, Richard Thomas, and Jimmy Stewart.

    The Council for Better Hearing and Speech partnered with the Production Services Department, National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology and created posters featuring celebrities to educate the public about hearing loss. The council is part of theBetter Hearing Institute (BHI), a not-for-profit corporation that educates the public about the neglected problem of hearing loss and what can be done to educate the public.

    Founded in 1973, the goals of the Council were to:

  • Erase the stigma and end the embarrassment that prevents millions of people from seeking help for hearing loss.
  • Show the negative consequences of untreated hearing loss for millions of Americans.
  • Promote treatment and demonstrate that this is a national problem.
