Biographical / Historical
National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology hosted the 1990 International Congress on Education of the Deaf from July 29 to August 3. The International Congress on Education of the Deaf (ICED) was first held in Paris in 1878 to bring together educators to discuss key issues in Deaf Education. Since then, ICED has continued to bring together an international contingent of those involved in the education of deaf and hard of hearing students to discuss advancements, theories, and accomplishments.
The conference consists of panel discussions, presentations, and poster sessions. The 1990 conference at NTID included presentations on the development of language skills, communication, instruction, cognition and learning, educational policies and services, organization and administration of schools and programs, students with special needs, psychosocial development and physical/mental health, education and work, college and continuing education, audiological and medical aspects of deafness, and deaf adults in society. ICED meets approximately every five years. The most recent conference was held in Vancouver, Canada in 2010.
