Biographical / Historical

Rochester Institute of Technology’s first official library opened in 1910, upon the hiring of its first librarian, Eleanor Gleason. After growing from a small collection into something larger, it was moved into its own building in 1958 when the Middle State’s Association found the collection of books to be too small and understaffed. Then, after relocating to the Henrietta campus in 1969, a true library building was built to house the collection and a full staff. Named after Charles F. and Florence M. Wallace, benefactors of the college, the newly constructed Wallace Memorial Library was built in 1968 along with the rest of the campus. Expanded in 1991, it added on space for a Graphics Arts collection (The Cary Library) and the Archives and Special Collections. During this time many photos were taken of the staff and construction.
