Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Gannett Lecture Series videotapes from 1987-2006. There are 191 videotapes whose topics include Constitutional Rights, The Bill of Rights, Racism and others. Lecturers included RIT faculty members, Ralph Nader, Cornel West, and James Kunstler to name a few. The lecture series was sponsored by an endowment from Caroline Werner Gannett.

Biographical / Historical

RIT's College of Liberal Arts began the Gannett Lecture Series in the mid-1970's in two-year thematic blocks, which have included environmental, citizenship, Constitutional and millennial themes. The series was designed to be of interest to students, faculty, and the general public and initially required all Senior Seminar students to attend the lectures. A Gannett Lecture Series director was appointed who was responsible for obtaining lecturers and others for panel discussions.

In 2006, the series transformed into the Caroline Werner Gannett Project. Its' program titled Visionaries in Motion IV, was a unique speaker series hosted by RIT, featuring lectures, exhibitions, symposia and workshops by leading artists, thinkers and scholars in the arts, sciences and technologies.
