RIT men's hockey jersey and gloves
Scope and Contents
Allan Shepard wore the jersey and gloves during the 1961-62 season. The jersey is a "hand-me-down" from the Rochester Americans hockey team. It is made of wool, white with red stars and lettering and a blue stripe. The lettering was changed from "Americans" to "RIT." The gloves were purchased in Buffalo from the CCM manufacturers store. The cost of outfitting the whole team with gloves was so expensive that they were not allowed to practice with real pucks for fear of damaging the equipment.

Historical Information: RIT hockey team
Allan Shepard, a member of the RIT men's hockey team, donated the jersey and gloves he wore during the 1961-62 season. He notes that the jersey and gloves were the first items acquired with school funds for the ice hockey club at RIT. The jerseys were purchased from the Rochester Americans hockey team when they no longer wore them. They were a white wool jersey featuring red stars and lettering and a blue stripe on the front. The jerseys orginally had American sewn on the front. To adapt for the new RIT team, all letters except the RI were removed and replaced with a T (RIT), sewn on by wives and girlfriends of the team members. Mr Sheppard's number was 18 which was sewn on the sleeve and the back of the jersey.
