Biographical / Historical

The RIT Interim Staff Council was formed in 1992. The primary purpose of this first group was to act on behalf of the professional and general staff of RIT, giving expression to their concerns, ideas, perspectives and representing their interests at all levels of the Institute. Additionally, the council would ensure that all staff are informed of matters pertinent to their professional lives at RIT. Staff council is not a union or bargaining unit. Rather, it was an effort to establish a system that would include staff as full partners with faculty and students in the governance of RIT.

In 1993, the first chair of RIT's Staff Council was elected: Alfreda Brooks Brown. In her Opening Day remarks on August 31, 1993, Brooks stated the purpose of Staff Council to be:

  • Address staff concerns as identified by Staff and/or Staff Council
  • Represent staff at Policy Council
  • Represent staff on Institute committees
  • Advise the president in matters related to staff, and to
  • Communicate Policy Council, Institute committee and other Institute information to staff.
