Historical Information: Rochester Institute of Technology Hockey Club

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Hockey Club was founded in the fall of 1959. They were given a budget of $1,020.00 to purchase the initial equipment to outfit 16 players. At that time, the team participated in the Monroe County Amateur Hockey Association, playing 13 games against three other league teams. The players paid $195.00 out of their own pockets for these games, and coached themselves along the way, as they didn't have the money to hire a head coach.

In 1961-62, with the help of the RIT Student Council, the budget was increased and they were actually coached by volunteer James Musker. At some point the team moved from the Rochester War Memorial to their own Ritter-Clark rink on the RIT downtown campus.

In 1962, the team formed a league with other teams in the area who faced similar issues around money, ice time, or scholarships. The league was known as the Finger Lakes Collegiate Hockey League(FLCHL). It consisted of six schools, including: Brockport, Hobart, Ithaca, University of Rochester, and Syracuse.

In 1965, men's ice hockey became an official varsity sport.
