M. V. Atwood collection of political cartoons
Scope and Contents
The Millard Van Marter (MV) Atwood collection of political cartoons consists of two original drawings given to Mr. Atwood. One is a political cartoon drawn by Elmer Messner titled Waiting [10.5 x 13.5"], the other a cartoon drawn by Charles Macauley titled The Homing Pidgeon [13 x 14.5"] and dated 1929. Both are signed by the creators. Also included is a photocopy of Mr. Atwood's obituary from 1941 published in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle and the Times-Union newspapers.

Biographical / Historical
These political cartoons were dedicated to the late M.V. Atwood who came to live in Rochester in 1927. In 1929, he became Associate Editor of Gannett News and and an early associate of Frank Gannett. A graduate ofCornell University in the class of 1910, he worked his college years as campus correspondent for the Ithaca Daily News. In 1911, he became owner of The Journal and built a group of five country papers which he sold in 1924 to join the growing forces of Frank Gannett. He worked at the Utica Observer-Dispatch for three years brfore coming to Rochester to become the managing editor of The Times-Union. He died in his home in 1941 at the age of 55.
