Collection Scope and Content Note

The Chris H. Hinesley collection contains mixed materials relating to 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations and outreach at RIT and from the greater Rochester area. The materials were compiled by Hinesley prior to their August 2024 retirement.

The collection has been arranged into two series. The physical materials comprise Series I, and have been housed in 2 boxes and 1 oversized folder. Box 2 contains a rainbow quilt by Gabrielle Orelli, a student employee at the GLBT Center.

Series II includes an oral history interview with Hinesley that was conducted by Marie Golisano Graham Outreach Archivist Landyn Hatch and University Archivist Liz Call on August 22, 2024. Digital materials from the interview are stored on the RIT Archives' network and are being processed for upload to the RIT Archives Oral History Web Portal.

Biographical Notes

Chris H. Hinesley (he/they) began work at RIT in 2006 as an adjunct professor of LGBT studies within the Women’s and Gender Studies Program (now Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies), and served as Co-Director of the program from 2014-2021.

In 2011, Hinesley was recruited to be a part of the staff for the GLBT Center with the title of Assistant Director for Campus Life - LGBTQIA+ Resources and Outreach, and was the inaugural leader of the Q Center as an LGBTQIA+ community resource center. In 2020, Hinesley was awarded the Isaac L. Jordan Sr. Staff Pluralism Award for staff excellence. Hinesley announced their retirement from RIT in 2024 and now works as the Associate Director of the LGBTQIA+ Center for Faculty and Staff at Boston University.

Hinesely has a BS in Exercise Science (‘89) and MS in Wellness Management (‘91) from Ball State University, and an Ed.D. in Executive Leadership (‘12) from St. John Fisher University.

Materials are pertaining to Hinesley’s position as the Assistant Director for Campus Life - LGBTQIA+ Programs and Outreach in the Q Center, now known as PRISM (PRogressive Intersectional Space to Meet), from 2011 until their retirement in August 2024.

Custodial History

The Chris H. Hinesley collection was acquired by the RIT Archives in August 2024 as a transfer from Chris H. Hinesley, Assistant Director for Campus Life - LGBTQIA+ Programs and Outreach. The materials were accessioned under Accession # 2025:007 and received by the RIT Archives in a plastic storage container.
