Collection Scope and Content Note

The RIT University News Podcast collection contains materials of recordings created from 2006-2012. Event recordings include audio files of events related to RIT, including news conferences, convocation speeches, inaugural addresses, and event announcements. News segments include recordings of Q&A sessions, faculty and university-related news, coverage of the Big Shot in Croatia, weekly news and events updates, and a segment related to student research. Recordings of speeches include those given by former RIT Presidents Albert J. Simone and Bill Destler, which cover topics such as large donations and the creation of new buildings, as well as addresses to the RIT community. This collection also includes podcast episodes and a news conference recording related to hockey at RIT, both men’s and women’s teams. Lastly, this collection also includes icons of the RIT News logo. All audio files in the RIT University News Podcast collection have corresponding summaries or full transcriptions in word documents, and the single video in this collection is closed captioned.



The RIT University News Podcast collection has been arranged into five series, four of which have been further divided into subseries. This digital collection can be accessed on-site in the RIT Archives or by contacting the University Archivist.

Historical Note

Michael (Mike) Saffran served as Associate Director and Manager of New Media at RIT University News from 1999–2012. Saffran received a Master’s degree in Communication and Media Technologies from RIT with his thesis about ownership in 2011 and taught as a lecturer in RIT’s School of Communication. The University News Podcasts started a few months into Michael Saffran’s tenure as Deputy Managing Editor of University News’ News & Events publication, and many of the shows that he hosted ended after the Fall 2012 semester, when Saffran departed RIT.

The RIT University News Podcast collection is a fully-digital compilation of audio files, summary and transcription files, images, as well as a captioned video file. The bulk of the materials are from 2006–2012.

Custodial History

The RIT University News Podcast collection was donated by Michael Saffran to the RIT Archives in September of 2012 on one DVD, and was accessioned by the Archives under Accession # 2012:054.
