Historical Note

The President’s Commission on Women is a cross-divisional team that strives to improve campus culture in order to create an environment where women can thrive. To do this, they identify issues critical to the climate of women on campus, advise and make recommendations to the President and Provost on these issues, communicate with other groups on campus concerned with gender and identity, prioritize the recruitment and retention of women on campus, and educate the community on issues impacting women. The President’s Commission on Women consists of two groups: an Executive Advisory (ExAc) Committee, which includes various leaders from across campus, and the PCW, which is made up of representatives from various colleges and divisions who meet regularly to achieve the objectives of the Commission.

The President’s Commission on Women was created in 2004 by former University President Dr. Albert J. Simone, who identified a need for an advisory council whose sole purpose is to raise awareness of issues related to gender, and specifically those surrounding the recruitment, retention, and environment of women on campus. Since then, the Commission has provided candid advice and comments related to systematic concerns of the environment of women on campus, as well as provided resources and education to the campus community. They are an ongoing and active group on campus.
