Collection Scope and Content Note

The Talking Walls collection contains essays written by RIT faculty, staff, and students about posters displayed within the exhibit, as well as photographic slides and other planning materials. Additional scope and content information can be found in the Contents List section of this finding aid.

The Talking Walls collection is arranged into two series, and the physical materials are housed in three archival document boxes.

Historical Note

Talking Walls was an exhibit mounted at RIT in the Wallace Library in September 2000, highlighting a selection of twentieth century advertising and promotional posters from the RIT Archives and Special Collections. The collection provided an interactive learning experience for members of the RIT community to comment on the design and illustration choices through dialogue and written response. Representative faculty from all colleges within RIT participated, along with several staff members. Professor Roger Remington’s Graduate Graphic Design class and Professor Diane Hope’s Visual Communication class wrote essays and text labels, which were displayed adjacent to their corresponding posters.
