Collection Scope and Content Note

The John Solowski collection contains both photographs and publications. While some of the materials are directly related to Solowski, others are related to Polish art and design.

The collection contains six photographs by Fabrice Strippoli, including two images featuring Solowski. The collection also includes 26 color prints from a Polish poster exhibit and several publications related to Polish art and design, such as an issue of Projekt from 1962 and a piece on Wojtek Kozak, a Polish illustrator. There is also a copy of Jazz, Where It Came From Where It's At by John S. Wilson and a booklet on a trip to New York City by RIT's third year Photographic Illustration class in 1967.

Biographical Note

John Solowski (1929-2009) served as a professor in the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) School of Art and Design from 1961 to 1968. He earned his B.S. from the University of Buffalo and an M.A. from Columbia University before joining the faculty. In the 1950s, he belonged to the Arena Art Group, an organization founded in 1951 to promote and support contemporary artists in the Rochester area. While at RIT, Solowski served as the co-advisor to the Art Students' Art Society.

Abstract

Photographs and publications or Polish art and design related to John Solowski, a professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The collection contains photographs by Fabrice Strippoli, two of which feature John Solowski, as well as color images from a Polish poster exhibit. Also included are printed publications on Polish art and design and a booklet highlighting a trip taken to New York City by the third year Photographic Illustration class in 1967.

Custodial History

The collection was given to Roger Remington, a professor at RIT, by another professor, Bob Keough. In May 2005, Remington donated the materials to the RIT Archive Collections.
