Scope and Contents

Replica bronze tiger sculpture mounted on a wood base, created in the late 1980s by sculptor Duff Wehle when he made the large tiger that stands on campus. Stands 6" high, 12' long, 5" wide. This was one of 200(?) made for the President (Rose) to give as gifts. Donation also includes a "tiger share" plaque (13" x 10") Share #143 of 100. "In Pursuit of Tradition, Spirit, and Pride," RIT Bengal Tiger, Est. Nov. 1989. Signed by President M. Richard Rose, Sculptor, D.H.S. Wehle, and Initiator Eric Senna (RIT student). Plaque is dated April 18, 1990.

Biographical / Historical

Wehle produced a number of landmark studies and major books about marine birds, including The Breeding Biology of the Puffins (1980), Studies of Marine Birds on Ugaiushak Island (1978), and Summer Food and Feeding Ecology of Tufted and Horned Puffins (1976). In the 1980s Wehle became a noted wildlife artist and sculptor, producing the life-sized bronze of the "RIT Bengal Tiger" on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology and winning the gold medal of honor from Allied Artists of America. Wehle's father, John L. Wehle, founder of the Genesee Country Museum in Mumford, N.Y., established the John L. Wehle Gallery of Sporting Art, home to one of the finest collections of sporting and wildlife art in the country.

Overview

Collection is a miniature replica of sculptor D.H.S. Wehle's bronze tiger that can be found on RIT's campus between the Student Union and the Wallace Library. Additionally, a mounted plaque authenticating ownership of the sculpture.
