Bekir Arpag teaching collection

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: CSC-0031

Scope and Contents

The Bekir Arpag teaching collection spans the period from the 1970s through the 1980s, and primarily contains documents and audio/visual materials used for teaching at the Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Printing Management and Sciences (RIT, SPMS). The Arpag collection includes images of commercial lithographic processes, as well as a few examples of early electronic scanning equipment. The 73 slides making up “RIT Scenery” and “RIT Labs” show images of the grounds near the RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences Gannett Building, and then labs inside that building in the SPMS.

The collection is organized into one series.

Series I. 35MM SLIDES AND RELATED MATERIALS holds 432, 35mm color slide transparencies. Most slides in the collection are presentations used to demonstrate lithographic printing plate-making machinery and techniques. Two slide series include printed transcripts of explanatory text that was to accompany the slide shows: for the OPTI-COPY IMPOSER, and Rachwal Industries. Two other slide series include audio cassettes that explain their corresponding slideshows: Introduction to Litho: Stripping Flats & Burning Plates, and GSI AUTOPREP. Seventy-three of the slides are photographs of the teaching facilities at the RIT, SPMS, ca. 1970-1980

Biographical / Historical

Bekir Arpag was an assistant professor in the RIT School of Printing Management and Sciences. He worked at RIT from 1953 to 1987. Arpag taught lithographic platemaking technologies during a time when commercial lithographic printing plates were created by a series of photographic manipulations using film-based processes. Large graphic art cameras were used to make the films, which were then taped together or “stripped” into the required layouts for binding. This layout creation was known as “imposition.” The finished film was then exposed onto a photo-sensitized metal printing plate and then used on a lithographic printing press. Several varying films would have to be prepared if the layout was to be printed using more than one color.
