J. Scott Patnode Shopping Bag collection

The J. Scott Patnode Shopping Bag collection contains approximately over 1,000 shopping bags, of which 750 are unique. It also contains books about the subject and documentation of the collection accrued by Patnode during his time as a collector.

Biographical note on J. Scott Patnode
James Scott Patnode spent his career at Gonzaga University. He had several roles through the years, and in 1995 became the first director and curator of the Jundt Art Center at Gonzaga. He has also curated a number of outside exhibitions of his shopping bag collection. He retired from Gonzaga in 2012.

Arrangement
This collection is arranged in three series.
Series I, Shopping Bags, is the largest series, comprising approximately 83 lid boxes of three different sizes. In arranging the series we have preserved the original order according to the donor's inventory. Some categories have been altered slightly or nested for consistency. The true orginal order is also available in Series III. The bags are named first based on issuing entity (brand name, retail establishment, museum, etc.), then with the text or image that appears on it. Bags in the "Uncategorized" sub-series are also tagged with a controlled subject heading which indicates the type of issuing entity.
Series II, Books, is Patnode's shopping bag reference library. There are twelve books in the series.
Series III, Documentary Ephemera, contains clippings, gallery annoucements, exhibition guides, and indices to the shopping bags of the collection. This series represents the record-keeping of the donor regarding his collection.
