Scope and Content Note

This series contains project proposals, magazines, a compact disc, a book, photographs, transparencies, 35mm color slides, contact sheets, prints, and notes. These materials document Cato’s professional photographic work. To review his personal and collected photographic collection, please refer to Series IV, Subseries D. Refer to the records/record jackets in Series I to see what records exhibit Cato’s photography. Highly notable in this series are Cato’s iconic images of top recording artists including Miles Davis, Lena Horne, John Coltrane, Cream, Simon & Garfunkel, Joan Baez, Mitch Miller, Johnny Mathis, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. The photograph with billboard exhibiting American Flyer is in box 24, folder 5. Some photos in the collection may not have been taken by Cato, but likely by photographers commissioned by Cato; note the credit stamps where applicable.

VHS and DVD materials require advance notice to access and are limited to on-site researchers only. Access to additional film and digital media cannot be provided. Access to portions of this collection is RESTRICTED and subject to the discretion of the curator. The 16mm color print with optical soundtrack is RESTRICTED due to needing special handling. Sketchbooks and scrapbooks in this collection are extremely fragile and require careful handling.
