The Marchbanks Press – calendar type specimens, 1915 - 1932
Scope and Content Note
This subseries is a compilation of collected company references arranged alphabetically by company name. In some cases, additional company names are provided in parenthesis.
Material in this subseries includes advertisements, price lists, type specimens, catalogs, notes, billheads, business cards, parts lists, paper samples, postcards, newsletters, instructions, diagrams, invoices, stationery (including envelopes), stock certificate, factory logs, patents, photographs, maps, correspondence, written works, appointment cards, factory passes, order forms, exhibition materials, articles, drawings, keepsakes, lists, manuals, samples, and legal papers.
Note that some specimen lists and specimens featured in Maurice Annenberg’s book, Type foundries of America and their catalogs, which Saxe provided further edits to, are arranged in this series by company name. See additional company advertisements in Subseries B. General company references, Box 28, Folders 16-17.
Several companies have multiple folders as proof of Saxe’s research and authorship on the subject. These companies include the Bruce’s New York Type Foundry, Golding Manufacturing Company, and The Kelsey Company. Records pertaining to The Kelsey Company are particularly extensive with a copy of A History of Small Presses and articles written by Glover Snow, president of the Kelsey Company from 1929 to 1960, as well as supplemental research and writings on small presses from Ralph Green, a friend of Snow and historian on the subject. Correspondence with Gene Mosher is also present; he was Snow’s son-in-law and later owner of the Kelsey Company. Although the authorship on small presses is more general in nature, it is included with the Kelsey Company papers in this series due to the author’s identity and origin of the materials being part of Snow’s records.
