Biographical / Historical

The Activities Hour program at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) officially started during the 1960s. The program was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about topics outside their normal area of study. A specific time was designated during which no classes or activities were scheduled except the Activities Hour program. Although talk of a such program occurred as early as 1958, the first scheduled events were held in 1966. The program's activities included freshman orientation workshops, lectures, discussion groups, and guest speakers. For instance, Julian Rivo from the New York State Traffic Safety Council spoke on the dangers of driving while intoxicated; the American Marketing Association sponsored a panel session on campus; a four-session marriage seminar was held in the spring of 1966; and Andy Warhol spoke with students during a question and answer session.
