John Ratcliffe collection of communication devices for the deaf
Scope and Contents
Collection of communication and noise alerting devices for the deaf used by donor John Ratcliffe throughout his life. As a deaf person, John relied on devices such as doorbell signals, flashing lights, vibrating devices, and Telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDDs) that assisted those living without hearing.
In addition, there are phone line management systems, a vibrating alarm clock, videophone signalers and strober receivers. Resources and publications for TDDs and other devices and equipment are also within this collection, such as Teletypewiters Made Easy!, various operating manuals, and The Blue Book TDI : 2015 TDI National Directory and Resource Guidelines. There is a Braille alphabet and numbers card and a 2011 American Deaf Schools calendar.
Added later to the collection is one folder containing three documents: a RAMI Dept. of Evening Instruction certification for Fred A. Ratcliffe (John's father) for completing a course in Camp Cookery in 1936; a quote by Ezra R. Andrews, RAMI's first Board president dated June 5, 1899; and a newsclipping dated 10/31/1935 about Boy Scout leaders taking a course in Home Economics at Mechanics Institute.
Also added in 2017, a copy of an article written by John Ratcliffe's wife, Frances who is deaf, about how they first met at RIT, their first date, and their long marriage.
