Scope and Contents

The collection contains two 2" bronze coins distributed by the Paris Mint. One side of the first coin depicts a relief of l'Abbe de L'Eppe in profile and has written "CH. Michel." On the back, written in French are his accomplishments and the year they took place and are encircled in oak leaves.

The other medal has a graphic depiction of Lady Liberty standing on what looks to be a Viking ship, Written is "Fluctuat nec mergitur," which means "fluctuates and sinks," which is the motto in the outer ornaments of the blazon of Paris that appears on the box. The Council of Paris building appears on the back. The council of Paris is the deliberative body responsible for the governing of Paris.

Medals were created by the Monnaie De Paris. Each is housed in the original blue box issued with the medal. Reads "Offert par Le Conseil de Paris."

Also included are two books, "Turning Points in the Education of Deaf People" by Edward Scouten and "Deaf Heritage: A narrative History of Deaf America" by Jack Gannon. Books can be found in the RIT Archives by searching the library catalog.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Albert Pimentel was a 1957 graduate of Gallaudet College, the only liberal arts college for the deaf, and later worked as the Director of Public Service Programs at Gallaudet College. Mr. Pimentel, who is deaf himself, advocated for legal rights for the deaf.
