Biographical / Historical
The National Technical Institute for the Deaf, one of ten colleges at RIT, was established by an act of Congress and signed into law by President Johnson in 1965. After an extensive national search, RIT was chosen as the permanent home for NTID, and the first group of students arrived in Fall 1968. Initially, classes were held in the main RIT academic buildings until the Lyndon B. Johnson building was completed which provided a customized space for educating the deaf. Both hearing and deaf faculty were hired to teach, as well as hearing and deaf staff. Many students educated at NTID have gone on to very successful careers and staff and faculty are prominent in their field. The goal of the NTID People Files is to capture some of the accomplishments and careers of the NTID community.
