Scope and Content Note

This collection contains six photo albums and one box of individual color 4 x 6 inch prints of events and activities of the Asian Deaf Club at RIT from 1991-2000. Events represented in the photographs are banquets, Miss National Asian Deaf Congress, Chinese new year party, executive board members, picnics, club members and many activities.

Historical Information

According to the first Asian Deaf Club's website in 1988, when the number of Asian Deaf students increased in NTID/RIT, Richard Lin and Rickey Tom established an organization for the Asian deaf students. Richard used his outstanding leadership skills and Rickey used his good business instincts to form Asian Deaf Club. Thanks to NTID Student Congress (NSC) for recognizing the organization and formalizing the club in the spring of 1989. Asian Deaf Club has been running active and well in the NTID community for over 19 years.

The purpose of the club is to promote friendship and mutual understanding among Deaf, Hard of Hearing and hearing Asian and non-Asian students. Their mission statement reads:
Give the opportunity to Asian and non-Asian students to have equal benefits of sharing a diversity of cultures and values among others.
Promote cross-cultural understanding among students with diverse backgrounds
Provide a safe place for student to express their opinions
Share knowledge and talents
Sponsors serve as facilitators during our bi-weekly meeting
