Biographical / Historical

Lilac Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf (LRAD) is a non-profit organization established in 1977 as the Sundial Rainbow Deaf Society (SRDS), for the deaf gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) community. LRAD is associated as a chapter under Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf (RAD), a national organization for the deaf GLBT community. LRAD is based in Rochester, New York, however it serves the entire Western New York region, between Syracuse and Buffalo. LRAD provides a social and educational environment for the deaf lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community and their allies. The purpose of the Alliance is to establish and maintain a society of Deaf GLBT to encourage and promote the educational, economical, and social welfare; to foster fellowship; to defend their rights; and advance their interests as Deaf GLBT citizens around issues of social justice; and to build up an organization in which all worthy members may participate in the discussion of practical problems and solutions related to their social welfare. RAD has over fifteen chapters in the United States and Canada.
