Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two fine jewelry pieces, a necklace and a hand-piece. The necklace is part of Series V student work by Juan Carlos Caballero-Perez. It is made of silver, copper, 18k, 14k, 24k gold, rutilated quartz and black pearls. The pendanant hangs from a beaded necklace composed of rutilated white quartz beads. The pendant hangs 17" long and is made of several segments including the main silver and copper breast plate that has silver wire curled accents and a long tail of three rectangular pieces ending in a quartz tip.

The hand-piece (held between your fingers and worn similar to a ring) is a pointed elongated shape made of fine silver on the majority of the body. The center of the hand-piece is decorated with fine silver dust and oxidized. 22k gold and 18k gold accents were used on the tips and center of the piece. It also has four diamonds set in gold tubes. The work is titled You and me. It was created in 2007.

Biographical / Historical

Born and raised in Mexico City, Mexico, Juan Carlos came to the United States in 1986. He received his Master’s of Fine Arts and Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), School for American Crafts. Having taught as an adjunct professor at RIT since 1994, Juan Carlos joined the Metals Department as an Assistant Professor in 2001 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007. He is the winner of numerous awards, including a New York State Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. He has been involved in public art projects in Rochester, including the creation of several benches for downtown and the creation of several steel sculptures. He exhibits both his jewelry and sculpture nationally and internationally including the Craft Alliance, St. Louis, Missouri; Calvin College Center Art Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Konkuk University, Seoul Korea; Museum of Natural History, Cleveland, Ohio and the Fuller Craft Center in Massachusetts. In addition, Caballero continues to create jewelry and sculpture at his Rochester, NY studio.
