    Biographical / Historical

    Alling Mackaye Clements was born in Rochester in 1888. He graduated from East High School in 1908, and from Mechanics Institute in 1911. He studied at The Art Students’ League in New York City from 1912 to 1914, then did freelance art work and scene painting in New York for several years and saw service in the Navy during World War I.

    After his marriage he lived in the Kendrick homestead at 1520 Portland Avenue, built in 1933 by his wife’s family. Mrs. Clements was the daughter of Dr. Ryland Kendrick, for many years a member of the faculty of The University of Rochester. On the Portland Avenue property, Mr. Clements built his separate studio of stone and wood with his own hands.

    In 1921 he returned to Mechanics Institute to teach in the Art Department. He studied and painted in Europe in 1926 and other summers were spent in Maine and Canada and other painting spots. Alling is best known for his landscape and coastal view paintings.

    He was a member and past president of the Rochester Art Club, a director for three years of the Print Club of Rochester, a member of the Genesee Painting Group, Memorial Art Gallery, American Legion, Museum of Arts and Sciences, First Baptist Church, and Vice President of the Association for Teen-Age Diplomats. He had a son Kendrick Alling Clements,a sister Mrs. Emily (Arthur) Heath of Thornell Road in Pittsford, and a brother Grant W. Clements resides in Lakeville. He died in 1957.
