Biographical Information: John Retallack
As an undergraduate, John worked with RIT professor Charlie Arnold. After graduation he worked in New York City as an assistant to many important photographers of people for the advertising business. In 1973, he opened his own business also working for advertising agencies. In 1981, he joined the faculty at Rochester Institute of Technology and the School of Photographic Arts & Sciences. He is now retired from teaching and freelancing again, photographing people, places and things.
Says John Retallack of his Colleagues project, In this project I am photographing people that I know personally or that I know by reputation. Because I am familiar with the sitters I often am looking for a certain expression or mannerism. Nonetheless discovery is always present. The photographs that please me most are the ones I feel are the most accurate characterizations of the sitters.
