Biographical / Historical
RIT Libraries established the Photo Purchase Prize Awards program in 1981 to provide a visual history of RIT's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences (SPAS) and to complement the already well-established Fine and Applied Arts Purchase Prize Awards program. Each year works are purchased for the collection from the SPAS Student Honor Show, a juried exhibition open to students in all departments of the School.
The committee complement for the award has changed over the years and now includes the Art and Photography Librarian and the RIT Archivist. The goal of the program is twofold: to select the best work from the exhibition but to also capture the diversity of work made by RIT students in the various SPAS programs. The collection reflects the change in photographic styles, subjects and processes that have occurred since 1981.
