    Biographical / Historical

    Norman Arthur Bate was born January 3, 1916 in Buffalo, New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Illustration from Pratt and a master's degree in printmaking and painting at the University of Illinois. In the 1950s, Bates gained early recognition as an illustrator of children’s books. In 1957, he came to RIT and served as professor of printmaking and illustration until his retirement in 1980.

    Norman Arthur Bate died in June 1980 in Geneva, New York.
