Biographical / Historical
Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), is well-known for his wood engravings, and in particular, those produced for various editions of Aesop’s Fables. His unique technique involved using metal engravers tools to carve against the grain into hard woods. An avid ornithologist, Bewick is best known for his History of British Birds.
