Biographical / Historical

Built in 1908, the Red Barn is a Wells-style, black walnut barn that belonged to the Krenzer family farm until RIT purchased the land in 1960's to build the Henrietta campus. In early spring of 1968, the barn was converted into a student activities building. The Red Barn started being used as a facility for the Center for Recreation and Intramurals circa 1970. On October 2, 1982 there was a renovation day to restore the Red Barn. The Red Barn was used for different types of activites such as a ropes course and the outdoor orientation program.

It wasn't until 2005 that the Red Barn Climbing Gym was established. The Red Barn is home to one of the top collegiate indoor rock climbing facilities in the country and is open to the public. The facility is also used for wellness instructional courses. The barn has two levels, the top floor has top-rope wall and a top-out boulder wall. The lower level has three sections containing multiple courses with bouldering caves and a padded floor.

Today, the barn is open seven days a week for rock climbing, and although it is primarily a bouldering gym with rope-less rock climbing and padded surfaces, there is one 35-foot top-roping wall. In 2013, they logged some 25,000 visitors to the barn.
