Scope and Contents

The William D. Gasser Distinguished Lecturer records contain promotional materials, such as brochures, invitations, and attendance cards for various lectures of the William D. Gasser Lectureship in Business series. Also included are itnerary and flyers for the lectureship series, as well as news clippings in RIT's News & Events and the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper about the distinguished lecturers and their speeches.

There is a copy of Michael N. Chetkovich's speech about "Accounting and Accountability", which was presented in 1977. Also included are memorandums between RIT deans, directors, department heads, faculty, and administrative and professional staff. There is a videotape of the 1996 William D. Gasser Distinguished Lecturer speech "Back to the Future" by A. William Wiggenhorn. Materials within the collection date from 1968 to 1996.

Biographical / Historical

William D. Gasser was an independent auditor at Jones Chemicals, Inc. from 1940 to 1967. He was also a partner-in-charge of the Rochester office of Haskins & Sells in 1967. Willam D. Gasser became a member of Jones Chemicals, Inc.'s board of directors and secretary to several companies owned by John Wiley Jones, the company's president. He joined the College of Business faculty in 1967 and achieved a list of honors and accomplishments. These include a citation from the editors of Who's Who in Commerce and Industry, Outstanding Kiwanian, a 10-year term as chairman of the Board of the New York State CPA Examiners, and RIT's Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1971. He also served on the boards of several charitable, business, and professional organizations, including the Catholic Charities of Rochester, the Hearing and Speech Center of Rochester, and the Monroe County Unit of the American Cancer Society.

The William D. Gasser Distinguished Lectureship was established by Jones Chemicals, Inc. of Caledonia, New York, in recognition of Professor Gasser's numerous contributions as a teacher at RIT and as a director of and financial advisor to Jones Chemicals, Inc. The annual program bringing distinguished guest lecturers to RIT's College of Business. Past lecturers include, but are not limited to: Michael N. Chetkovich, managing partner of Haskins & Sells; Congressman Barber B. Conable, Jr.; C. Jackson Grayson, Jr., Founder and Chairman of the American Productivity and Quality Center; Jerry Greenfield, a co-founder of Ben and Jerry's; David Neelmanm, founder and chairman oof JetBlue Airways Corp., and Randi Zuckerberg, CEO of Zuckerberg Media.
