Biographical / Historical
Students in Dr. Michael Brown's Spring 2015 class "The City in History: Rochester" were asked to complete a project called "Voices of the ROC." The project involved conducting oral interviews of Rochesterians who also work at RIT, about their memories of the city, their experiences here, and their sense of the changes in the city over time.
As part of the class, the students received basic training in oral history - the practice of conducting interviews for historical research. Following the interviews, each of the nine groups were responsible for giving a brief oral presentation on their interviewee's Rochester reflections to the rest of the class.
The three goals of the project were: first, to enhance their understanding of recent Rochester history; second, to develop an understanding of how friends, family members and associates can be valuable sources of information about history; and third, to create an archive of Rochester reflections at RIT for posterity. Subsequent iterations of the class may add to these materials, and in time they could grow to become a resource for scholars and the community alike.
