Scope and Contents

The RIT Delta Phi Epsilon: Beta Upsilon Chapter memorabilia collection contains memorabilia from the organization’s early days in 1993 to its 20th anniversary celebration at RIT in May 2015. From the organizations time as the Royal Ladies, there is a pair of white boxer shorts that says “Congratulations Royal Ladies Class of ‘93,” and a cup with the same message. On the back of that cup, there are two columns of names, listing the Royal Ladies Class of 1993. Their names are as follows: Suzy Balogh, Lisa Bielicki, Keira Chin, Jen Clarke, Jill Clayman, Jamie Dolgas, Trish Duggan, Maria Franzoni, Sue Greiner, Chere Griffin, Christina Khoury, Kim Kowker, Sherie Micklei, Steph Newell, Vicky Overbeck, Karen Peterson, Kristina Schulze, and Tara Scheils. From the late 1990s and early 2000s, there are event shirts and numerous lettered shirts. There are three event shirts from Delta Phi Epsilon’s 9th Annual Rollerblade to Geneseo, two from their Spring Weekend event, and one from their PEARL program. The annual rollerblade event raised money to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, one of Delta Phi Epsilon’s philanthropies. A barbecue is hosted during Spring Weekend by Delta Phi Epsilon to celebrate the end of the school year. The PEARL Program is a leadership program created by Delta Phi Epsilon which focuses on areas of development and personal growth, such as: scholarship, self, service, sisterhood, and social. There are six Delta Phi Epsilon lettered shirts with various colors and patterns.

Miscellaneous items related to the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority include two towels with the sorority’s letters and flower embroidered on it, four sets of stickers with their letters, their mascot (the unicorn), and/or their flower, the lovely purple iris. Also included is a wallet card that has a statement about what being a sister truly encompasses with a quote by Carey Martin.

From Delta Phi Epsilon: Beta Upsilon’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, called “From Royals to Pearls,” there are event programs, two jewelry charms, and two commemorative wine glasses. The jewelry charms are circular and include the sorority letters, chapter name, and establishment date. The event programs include a weekend itinerary describing the sisterhood events during the 20th anniversary celebration weekend, including a welcome event, a formal event, and a send-off brunch.

Biographical / Historical

Delta Phi Epsilon, an international sorority was founded on March 17, 1917 at the New York University School of Law. Delta Phi Epsilon is a non-sectarian social sorority. The sorority’s colors are royal purple and pure gold and its flower is the “lovely purple iris.” Its jewel is the pearl. Their motto is “Esse Quam Videri” (Latin); which translates to: “to be rather than to seem to be.” The Delta Phi Epsilon sorority has 3 international philanthropies: the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), and the Delta Phi Epsilon Education Foundation.

Delta Phi Epsilon sorority sought to expand their chapters internationally throughout the 20th century. At Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), expansion of Greek life and chapters could only occur if an organization met certain criteria. In March 1991, a group of women came together and called themselves the Royal Ladies. In April 1991, these women became the founding sisters of the Royal Ladies. These women strongly identified with the core values of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, which are justice, sisterhood, and love. The Royal Ladies sought to become an official chapter of the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority and were granted colonization as the Gamma Colony of Delta Phi Epsilon in April 1994. The Beta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Phi Epsilon was officially established at RIT in May 1995. The Delta Phi Epsilon: Beta Upsilon chapter celebrated its 20th Anniversary at RIT over the weekend of May 1-3, 2015 with various events for active and alumnae sisters.
