Scope and Contents

The plaque reads Rochester Institute of Technology, Veterans Memorial Court honoring men and women of the Institute who served their country, Nov. 11, 1958 The courtyard was a wide open concrete circular space containing seating areas for students to study and work outside between the Eastman and Bevier buildings. A United States flag stands in the center.

The plaque measures 25.75 x 13.5 inches and is a metal sign encased in wood frame. The sign is extremely heavy and the exact location of where the plaque hung is unknown.

Biographical / Historical

In August 1957, the Jenkinson apartments were torn down to create a small open space between the Eastman and Bevier buildings which gave students an outdoor area to congregate and study. This was the spot where in 1962 then President, Mark Ellingson announced to the students that the Institute would be moving to Henrietta NY.

The plaque was found in a room in A510 of the Student Union in 2007 and deposited to the RIT Archives by Carol Reed.
