Geneseean publications and calendars

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: RITArc-0506

Scope and Contents

Geneseean publications and calendars contains issues number 1, April 1969 through number 8, 1978/79 of the publication created by second and third year students enrolled in the Illustrations Department of the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences taught by Arthur A. Terry.

Number 9 of the Geneseean was produced in the form of a calendar for 1980. Students working on the project that year felt that communicating through this format offered new advantages over the magazine format. The underlying theme of the calendar was personalities in the working world. Number 11 of the Geneseean was also in calendar format focusing on the theme of immigration in the United States. Under the direction of Michael A. Geissinger, each of the calendars featured student photographs with personal essays describing the story they were conveying in their photographs.

Number 6, 1976/77, and number 10, 1981 are missing from the collection, and there is one unnumbered issue from 1975.

Historical Information: Geneseean

The first issue of the Geneseean in 1969 states the purpose of the new publication was necessity. Twenty some students with little or no background in the area of Journalism and only a vague understanding of their final objective, were given and undertook assignments with one ultimate purpose: To learn something of the nature of photography in print- how it comes about and the special nature of the problems involved working with a story as opposed to the individual photograph. Arthur A. Terry, instructor and editor of the first issue wanted the students to learn all of the duties and problems involved in producing, art-directing and editing the magazine, making the project much more meaningful to those involved.

By 1980, under the direction of Michael A. Geissinger, the Geneseean took shape in the form of a calendar.
