Scope and Contents

The Arthur J. Plouffe collection on RIT Fencing contains photographs and newsclippings about the RIT women's and men's fencing squads, primarily during 1953-1958. The collection documents the success of the women's squad during four undefeated seasons. It focuses on the special talents of two young women who contributed heavily to the success of those teams, Barbi Brill and June Johnson. Also included is information on the induction of June Johnson into the RIT Sports Hall of Fame in 1974.

Many of the photographs are identified and dated, as well as some of the newsclippings.

Biographical / Historical

Arthur J. Plouffe joined RIT as the fencing coach during the 1955-56 season. Plouffe had been active in Rochester fencing since 1940 as a member of the RIT fencing club. This club blossomed into a varsity sport at RIT in 1949. Plouffe coached the RIT men's and women's squads from 1955-1959, and came back to assist with coaching for a few years in the 1970's. Mr Plouffe fenced with the 1956 Olympic Epee squad.

The women's fencing squad won four Western New York championships over four consecutive years. Two team members led the squad to many of these victories: Barbi Brill and June Johnson.
