Biographical / Historical

RIT began to review the academic calendar in the mid-1960s. Changes were recommended based on what would be best for students and faculty. A study was conducted by the Faculty Calendar Committee and a proposal was sent out to different colleges within RIT proposing that the University switch from a quarter system to a trimester system. Many departments and faculty were not happy with this proposed change.

In 1965 a study was released that was done under the guidance of Nelson Associates through a grant received from the Fund for the Advancement of Education. This study examined the effects that switching from a quarter to a trimester system would have on faculty, students and enrollment. A trimester calendar was proposed. However, the quarter system calendar continued to stay in place. Review of the institute calendar was done every 4 years starting in the 1970’s to ensure that the system the University had settled on was still fulfilling the needs of both students and faculty.

In 2010-2012 RIT transitioned from the quarter system to semester system, which began in Fall 2013.
