Biographical / Historical

The Commission for Promoting Pluralism was established in 1991, prior to this it was known as the Commission on Cultural Diversity. The name was changed because it was felt that the title, “promoting pluralism,” better mirrored the work that needed to be done by the commission.

Isaac L. Jordan Sr. served as first chair, a position he held from 1991 until his death in 1994. The commission consisted of a representative group of RIT students, faculty, staff and administrators who nurtured an environment in which complex issues were discussed and all community members were valued for their individual contributions. The commission held many workshops, lectures and open discussion panels all related to discussions of race, gender and civil rights, as well as conferences such as an Annual Conference on Racism, Annual Campus Week of Dialogue and an Annual Expressions of Diversity Conference. Awards were designed to honor staff and faculty who were working diligently to promote diversity on campus. The commission has been superseded by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
