Biographical / Historical
The RIT computer center first opened in 1963 in the basement of the science building. Operated as an all-institute service department like the library, services were provided to all students and faculty at no additional cost. The decision was made in 1970 to centralize all computing services at RIT. This included not only the computer center but also the University’s information services department. The new centralized office was called the Office of Computer Services. Under the guidance of a committee known as the Computer Users’ Committee, the office grew. In 1978, the Report of the Task Force on Information Systems and Computing concluded that the Office of Computer Services needed to be re-organized to be more effective. In 1981 as a response to the growth of computing and information systems at RIT, the office was restructured. It became known as Information Systems and Computing and consisted of six departments. The ISC held many seminars and workshops. This office is now known as Information and Technology Services.
