Scope and Contents

The collection on Edward J. Ries consists of a variety of personal objects and papers related to Edward Jacob Ries. The collection consists of four photographs (one photo of Ries and three photos of his residence), Ries’s birth and marriage certificates, several army papers, pilot’s book, six metallic objects (two are pins from the U.S. Army, two buttons, a locket, and a coin), and other documents.

Biographical / Historical

Edward J. Ries (1889-1975) began his career at the Ritter Dental Manufacturing’s company in 1904 as an apprentice in the electrical department. In 1918, he entered the United States Army school of Military Aeronautics at Cornell University, served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1919. He returned to Ritter Dental in Rochester where he became assistant sales manager and climbed the company’s executive ladder, eventually he was promoted to vice president and general manager and in 1941 became president of the company until1953. He then accepted the post of chairman of the board from 1953 to 1965.

He was also an honorary member of the Board of Trustees of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute and in recognition of his services to RIT and for his accomplishments and service to the community, Mr. Ries was named RIT’s Outstanding Alumnus in 1955.
