Biographical / Historical

RIT's interfaith Center was dedicated in June 1985. The building is named after major benefactors Kilian J. and Caroline F. Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt had graduated from the Mechanics Institute (now RIT) in 1935, and the dedication of the new building commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of Mr. Schmitt's graduation. The Schmitts lived in Rochester and owned and operated parking lots. The Schmitts had two requirements when they agreed to fund the building: that the chapel be at the center of the campus and that it be inter-faith. The Center offers services for many religions from around the world and serves as a place of solace for any member of the RIT community.
