Biographical / Historical

Barbi Brill was a photography graduate of RIT and well known for being on the RIT fencing team. Active on campus, Brill served as photo editor of the RIT Reporter, and was a member of the Choraliers, Phi Upsilon Phi, and Delta Lamda Epsilon. In 1957, Brill was the only woman in the graduating class in the Photography department, earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts. After working in the field for eight years, Ms. Brill accepted a teaching position in the Photo Illustration Departement at RIT in 1965.

In the 1950s, fencing flourished at RIT. Brill ranked among the very best. During her career, the team captured 36 straight matches, including two very rare shutouts. Brill fenced four seasons, highlighted with a 9-1 record in 1954-55 when RIT won the Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association title. Enroute to the crown, RIT won 10 straight matches, a first in the tournament's 27-year history. As a sophomore, she placed sixth in the Amateur Fencers League of America Tournament, also won by RIT. After receiving her bachelor's degree in 1957, she continued to compete in the National Amateur Fencers League of America and was a member of United States Olympic squads in 1964 and 1968, serving as an alternate. In 1986, she was inducted into the RIT Athletics Hall of Fame.
