Biographical / Historical

RIT Student Government was formally recognized in 1951. According to the preamble of the Student Government charter, the purposes of Rochester Institute of Technology Student Government are:

  • To represent the students through a centralized representative government.
  • To facilitate communication and understanding between students, the student government, and the Institute.
  • To solicit and receive student issues, concerns, and opinions.
  • To ensure and expand student participation in Institute decisions affecting students.
  • To safeguard the individual and collective rights and freedoms of students.
  • To coordinate and expand student involvement in all areas of campus life.

    Immediate Source of Acquisition

    Accession number(s): 07:12, 10:20

    RIT Student Government records are comprised of three accessions. First, Student Senate minutes, 1964-1974 were separated from Student Association records, RITArc.0237. The second accession (07:12) consisted of 2 boxes, donated by Cheryl Phillips of the Student Affairs office on March 6, 2007. A third accession (10:20) was received in the RIT Archives from Carol Reed, Administrative Advisor to Student Government, in April 2010.
