Scope and Contents

Collection of two deeds and one affidavit from Nathaniel T. Rochester. The first is a warranty deed from Hiram Smith and wife to James M. Whitney and Nathaniel T. Rochester for the sale of land in Monroe County for $1,200. The second deed is from Nathaniel and Catherine Rochester to James Wilson for the sale of land in the City of Rochester for $13,000.

The affidavit affirms the identities of Nathaniel and Catherine Rochester and that Catherine signed the second deed without "any fear or cumpulsion" from her husband.

There are also two letters (1977) from Alfred Davis, Administrative Secretary of RIT's Board of Trustees regarding the gifting of the deeds and affidavit to the RIT Archives.

Biographical Information: Nathaniel T. Rochester

Nathaniel Thrift Rochester was born on March 14, 1802, in Hagerstown, Maryland. He was the son of Nathaniel Rochester (1752-1831), Revolutionary War soldier and founder of Rochester, New York. On June 15, 1836, Nathaniel T. married Catherine Ann Cummings. They would have six children: James Cummings, Nathaniel Beatty, Nugent Coleman, Frederick William, Alfred Gardner, and Catherine Cummings.

Rochester held numerous posts throughout his life, including: Public Notary, Deputy County Clerk, Director of the Rochester Academy of Sacred Music, Town of Gates Supervisor, and was appointed to the state militia. Nathaniel T. Rochester died on June 14, 1883, in Saratoga, New York. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
