Historical Information: RIT Women's Center

In the mid-1980s, a group of women working at RIT began to plan a Women's Network, modeled after the Rochester Women's Network. The idea was to support other female staff, faculty and students on campus, provide a forum for women's issues, and improve the campus environment for women. From 1986-1988, the RIT Women's Network drafted by-laws, elected officers, held regular monthly meetings featuring workshops and guest speakers, and started a book club.

However, by 1992, members wanted an office, an official "place" for the Network. The RIT Women's Center opened in March 1993 in the Student Union. A coordinator was hired, and the new Women's Center replaced the RIT Women's Network. The goals of the Women's Center include: promotion of the academic, social, pyschological, physical, and spiritual needs of women, and address domestic violence and gender issues.
